The Department of Anesthesiology, Affiliated Hospital of Sichuan North Medical College, has become a medical grade A key discipline and a key clinical specialty construction project in Sichuan Province, a key professional base for standardized training of national residents, a training base for anesthesia talents in short supply at the grassroots level and for anesthesia nurses, and a strategic cooperation unit of the National Clinical Medical Research Center of Anesthesiology. Our department has always been the unit of national member of the Anesthesia Committee of the Chinese Medical Association and the Association of Anesthesiologists, the vice-chairman of the Anesthesia Committee of the Sichuan Provincial Medical Association and the Association of Anesthesiologists, the chairman of the Anesthesia Committee of the Nanchong Municipal Medical Association, and the Nanchong Municipal Clinical Anesthesia Quality Control Center.
Anesthesiology specialty of Sichuan North Medical College has become a first-class construction specialty and a characteristic specialty in Sichuan Province, a construction specialty of "Quality Project of Higher Education" and "Pilot of Comprehensive Reform of Specialties" at the provincial level, and the first batch of application-type demonstration specialties in Sichuan Province. Simultaneously, the staff in our department are currently working hard to declare the first-class specialty in the whole country.
The number of anesthesia cases in our department has been increasing year by year. In the year of 2023, the number of different types of anesthesia without medical errors or disputes has reached 70000. Many anesthesia techniques are at an advanced level in China and the province. For example, our department has developed numerous precise and specific anesthesia management techniques for complex and minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery. Furthermore, ultrasound-guided multilevel of nerve block, precise vascular puncture, precise monitoring and management of intraoperative blood volume, perioperative lung protection, and anesthesia and monitoring for elderly and critically ill emergency surgery patients, techniques for pain-free labour and delivery, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders have been also developed in our department.
The team of talents has gradually expanded, there are 53 anesthesiologists in our department, including 2 professors and chief physicians, 11 associate professors and associate chief physicians, 10 Ph.D.'s and 5 Ph.D.'s in progress, 6 master's degree supervisors, 1 in aid of Africa, 2 in support of primary health care institutions. Moreover, there are 30 nurse anesthetists, including 1 associate nurse practitioner and 9 charge nurses.
At present, great progress has also been achieved in scientific research. Clinical and basic research has focused on multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, inhalational anaesthesia, pain, perioperative organ protection, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, translational neuroscience, new drug development of intravenous general anesthetics, etc. In the past three years, the number of published scientific research article has increased, including more than 40 SCI articles, more than 30 core journal articles. Among the articles, 1 paper won the Outstanding Paper Award of Sichuan Provincial Medical Association. In addition, more than 20 scientific research projects at various kinds of scientific topic have been supported, 13 patents, and 3 monographs have been obtained.
At the aspect of cultivating talents, in the past three years, we have trained more than 250 interns; more than 60 anesthesiology postgraduates and standardized training of qualified residents; 22 anesthesiologists in short supply at the grassroots level; 7 anesthesiologists have completed the directive aid to Africa and grassroots support. In addition to the routine anesthesia skills for surgery, our department has established a series of featured innovative teaching techniques, such as ultrasound-guided nerve block technique, lung ultrasound, fibrinoscopic awake tracheal intubation technique for critically ill patients, anesthesia and resuscitation of obstetrics critical illnesses, refined anesthesia management. Generally, we creatively introduced ultrasound technology into undergraduate education in China.
